5 Tips to Motivate Yourself
When it comes to self motivation, I’m honestly not consistent. I love to work with someone or a small tribe headed in the same direction! A true collaborator I am.
I small collective helping each other and encouraging each other to reach our goals, talk about our future vision, and hold each other accountable for the things we said we wanted…long after the emotion we said it in has left or when it’s just not easy.
Before dreams come to fruition while no one sees the work behind the scenes. Yep, that’s where I find joy with others!
Unfortunately, we don’t always have a tribe that has our backs, a group holding us accountable, or a constant reminder we are capable of doing more and achieving more than we think! For me, hubby is AHH-MAZING support but he’s not always accessible when I need a little motivation…or need a kick in the rear to get myself in gear lol. He works almost full time (for now) outside of our home and not always where he has signal to hold a call.
So, I did some searching around to find some tips. I had a HUGE list and I started reducing by removing the more common suggestions, obvious ideas, and things I’ve heard myself repetitively.
These 5 tips that I was left with, though I heard some before, I realized I wasn’t doing it,or had fell away and never put my finger on it!
I had kind of a ‘duh’ moment when I read them and I made a special notation in my journal to pay attention to them more closely. So, I thought what better than to share them with others?! I can’t be the only one out there that’ll get that ‘duh’ moment…and if I am that’s fine to but maybe they’ll spark an idea for you if they don’t directly help.
1. Remind yourself WHY you’re doing what you’re doing – What results will you obtain?
This is one of those “Your why must be bigger than your excuses or it’s not really your why” situations. Remind yourself these things:
- Your core purpose for what you’re doing.
- What results you will obtain upon completion or reaching your goals.
- What will it feel like when you get there.
- How will it change your future?
- Will it impact others and how?
2. Gratitude leads to Growth –
Your level of gratitude is directly related to the level of growth you will experience. So, remind yourself what you are grateful for and what you will be grateful for once you achieve the results you’re working towards. Have an attitude of gratitude.
Some ideas that might help you focus on your gratitude level:
- Keeping a gratitude journal/list
- Writing what you’re thankful for each morning on the bathroom mirror before you start your day
- Writing what you’re thankful for on a chalkboard. – Hang it by the front door so when you get home from a stressful day at work you can immediately help yourself shift mindsets before walking into your family!
- Set an alarm named ‘Speak thanks for something right now’ on your phone each night to go off at a random time the next day. (I love this because subconsciously I think of things I’m thankful for throughout the day waiting on the alarm to go off)
Now, take those same four tips and apply them in futuristic terms!
- Journal what you are thankful for that will come to pass in the future
- Write what you will be thankful for once you reach your goals
- Write what you will be thankful for in the future at the end of a day on the chalkboard
- WHen the alarm goes off speak outloud what the future holds that you are excited to be thankful for once received
3. Look at your visions and goals –
Whether it’s a printed out board filled with all of your current dreams and goals that you walk by multiple times a day in your home or saved pictures and words in an album or notepad on your phone that you carry with you, look at it multiple times a day!
Visualize what’s on it, smell it, taste it, feel it, and study it. Feel what it will feel like to obtain those goals. Own them and receive them.
We are surrounded by negatives, nah sayers, distractions and discouragement. Remind yourself multiple times a day of where you are headed instead of where you are now.
This will help you stay focused on getting the uncomfortable or monotonous things done when you don’t feel like it because you know they directly impact how and when you will reach your goals and dreams!
4. Choose to take the first step before you choose not to-
Decide to continue or not. It’s a decision. It’s simply an action paired with a yes or no question, don’t make it complicated.
Do you want the results? YES or NO?
Don’t ask yourself if you want or feel like doing the process, focus on the results.
For example:
Wake up early and immediately putting on your gym clothes as your feet hit the floor. Before you give yourself the thought of choice to decide if you’re going to work out or not.
THAT is deciding to take action you know you should do even if you don’t fell like it…once prepared, then decide if you should complete the action or change direction.
5. Your Senses. Sight, Sound, Touch, Taste, Smell-
Stimulate them all positively.
If the smell of citrus makes you feel good and the sound of music makes you want to get up and move, then spray some air freshener or light a candle and put some tunes on!
Example:
- If a scent or sound reminds you of a dark time in life or stirs up emotions or feelings that are negative, avoid those things! Especially in your closest surroundings (like your home).
- Replace it with a scent or sound that reminds you of a joyous memory or time-frame in your life.
This may take some evaluating to find positive and negative triggers! Keep in mind that triggers can be through any of the senses.
I once had a friend that a genre of music, specifically certain songs, though she liked the songs and even sang along, she finally realized they were triggering sad feelings moments after they were over. Those were very popular songs during her teen years when her parents were going through a nasty divorce.
Same friend discovered the scent of Jasmine gave her a feeling of peace and excitement. Her grandmother’s fence was covered in Jasmine. That’s where she stayed a lot of the time and had good childhood memories.
I didn’t realize for the longest time that a particular dryer sheet scent was triggering my ‘down and low energy’ mood. It directly correlates to a time in childhood.
Once I realized it I immediately changed it out for the same scent we used when we were first married and bam my mood and the way I felt while being home was immediately adjusted.
A Few Resources I Gathered For You to Help You Stay Motivated!
Below are a few great articles I think you will find inspiring and helpful!
I personally feel like when I’m struggling with something it’s helpful to study on it multiple times so it sinks in until something ‘clicks’ and I’m able to apply what I’m learning.

A couple final thoughts that may be helpful resources for you:
1. Joining and being active in a Facebook group with others headed in the same direction, shared passions, or goals is always a good idea to keep your mind focused and progressing forward.
I personally have these particular groups on the home screen of my phone so I’m not distracted by the feed lol.
2. Finding someone to partner with as you both are working towards the same goal or in the same area is great but we don’t always have that option.
So, finding someone that has created the results you’re wanting and following their footsteps is a great way to stay motivated, as long as you aren’t playing the comparison game.
For instance, I follow a few mom bloggers (I’m not living a mom life) but they’re creating results in their business that I can’t deny and they keep me enthusiastic in my goals by watching them reaching theirs.
I always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, so I love seeing them accomplish this dream of their own!

Like I said in the beginning of this post, I love collaborating with others and would love to hear from you!!
